We’re growing and have an incredible opportunity for someone to be our new Director of Research & Development, leading our talented multi-disciplinary team of scientists at our state-of-the-art Santa Fe, New Mexico lab. We run lab-scale bioreactors for process development, strain evaluation, and scale-up production. It’s an awesome time to join as we’re building our process to a commercial manufacturing scale in partnership with external contract manufacturing organizations.

A day in the life at Trait Biosciences as our Director of Research & Development: 

• You will lead a team of researchers advancing the water solubility of cannabinoids, using microbial genetic modifications and using chemistry processing techniques designed to deliver water-soluble cannabinoids and conjugates 

• You will research roadmap covers defining the science strategy and hypotheses, followed by lab-scale development and confirmation of scientific theories, and concluding with leading and enablement of 3rd party commercial partners to manufacture novel ingredient(s) successfully

• You will drive the creation and publication of Trait intellectual property and its defense as needed 

• You will manage the researchers and together build out a strong IP foundation for Trait businesses, and commercial profitable ingredient(s) 

• You will edit & generate reports and presentations as required to explain R&D’s work process and output, both to scientific and business audiences. As required, you will represent Trait’s research capability and results, both internally within Trait and externally with scientific and business forums 

• You’ll have direct accountability for the talent development and performance management of direct reports (technical & interpersonal) 

• You’ll focus on guiding the team to timely milestone accomplishments as we grow through the various stages of commercialization, scale-up, and product development

Who are you? 

• Excited to work with cannabinoid technology and a proven people leader with 10+ years of people management and leadership experience in a pharmaceutical/industrial/agricultural/food & beverage biotech environment or relevant fields of science (microbial genetics, fermentation, DSP chemistry) and related commercialization experience

• Able to execute Trait’s strategic vision as well as provide functional expertise 

• Act as a key resource for the team when needing guidance on projects, e.g., solutions to technical challenges, task organization, meeting timelines 

• Possess strong familiarity with navigating novel ingredients through regulatory channels, clinical research

• Experienced in interactions and teamwork with commercial partners (manufacturing, QA, finance, and others), as well as working/leading 3rd party labs/contractors in performing tasks associated with Trait’s R&D business model

• Ph.D. and comparable experience in relevant science fields Trait is involved in (e.g., microbiology, biochemical engineering, fermentation engineering, organic chemistry)

• Great communicator - written and verbal 

• Team player and collaborator 

• Critical thinker and problem solver 

• Self-starter who enjoys working autonomously as well as relationally collaborating with scientists to make appropriate and timely decisions to meet deadlines on experiments and projects 

• High level of competency in understanding experimental procedures performed to assure the accuracy and quality of results 

• Operate using microbiology & chemistry lab GLP and techniques, and safety protocols
